Mother's Day Classic

I've raised $406.96 of my $200.00 goal

My Story

I am participating in the Mother's Day Classic and raising funds for breast cancer research.
This may come as a shock to anyone who knows me. I have been quoted saying, "I get out of breath running a bath!" And yet here I am entering an eight kilometre run.
At the tail-end of 2013, I decided it was time to lose the spare tyre that I had accumulated through years of... well eating and drinking more than I was exercising. Having lost a few kilograms I found myself with some energy to spare and bought myself some running shoes. I'm yet to run 8km; my current best is 6.49km... so this will be a challenge!
I'm dedicating my run to my Mum who, happily, beat breast cancer some years back. Her positive attitude during her treatment was incredible and inspirational. Thank you Mum!
Every extra dollar I raise through fundraising goes towards vital research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer.
Along with thousands of Australians nationwide, I will be making a difference on Mother's Day and taking steps to save lives by helping fund breast cancer research.
It is through research that we will find a cure. You can help too by donating online here.

Update: 2014-04-24

I love music. I thought it might be fun to have my sponsors suggest a song for me to listen to while I'm running on the day. If you're a Spotify user, you can (if you want) contribute add a track to Pete's Mother's Day Classic Running List.
Oh... and the night I signed up, while we were having dinner, K pointed out that I'll be running the morning after the Melbourne Rebels' Gala Ball. So I'm sure I'll be waking up refreshed and ready to run!
If you'd like to follow my training progress, you can follow me on Endomondo.
Thanks for your generosity!

Update: 2014-04-25 (ANZAC Day)

Thank you so much for breaking through my fundraising target of AU$100. Half of that came from my Mum. Told you she was awesome!
Since there are still two weeks to go, I'm upping my target to AU$200. Because I can. You're welcome.
I'm glad that I've still got a couple of weeks to prepare. I did Training Run Number 2 this morning. It was hard work and my distance didn't improve.
Today, for the first time since I started running I ran without any music. This was following Fitta's advice. And because I couldn't find my earphones. Mostly what I heard was the unfit wheezing of an old bloke who over-indulged over the Easter holiday. Will have to try harder to find those headphones. If you've sponsored me, please contribute to my Mother's Day Classic Running List.
I've now completed the Couch-to-5K programme. While I'm not a huge fan of the app, the programme itself is pretty great. There is no way I would have considered an 8km run a couple of months ago. I have come a long way and I'm pretty happy about that.

Update 2014-05-02

Since last week, I've completed three training runs.
Training Run Number 3 on Sunday was fairly leisurely. I'd hoped to complete 8km, since I had no time constraints but finished 40m short due to a lack of proper planning and general unfamiliarity with the Endomondo app!
Training Run Number 4 on Tuesday morning was poor, 4.76km in 31m:02s but brightened up by the Endomondo app reading me a "peptalk" from my little brother.
Training Run Number 5 was the best yet! I took a bit of a circuitous route to ensure that I didn't stop a few metres shortand ended up covering 8.19 km in 49m:51s (about 6:05 min/km). I'm pretty happy with that: it bodes well for next Sunday..
Thanks to those who have sponsored me so far, I'm delighted by your generosity and support. To those who've yet to contribute, there are just 9 days left. I'd love to reach the AU$200 mark.
Don't forget to add a track to Pete's Mother's Day Classic Running List when you sponsor me!
